For Women's Head Basketball Coach Lane Lord, encouraging others to give is no small sacrifice.
"Our hands are still tired from signing our names on all those letters," joked Lord, one of the chairs of this year's Faculty Staff Campaign at Pittsburg State University. "But I guarantee you it's worth it."
On Oct. 6, the Office of University Development officially kicked off the annual "Power of One" campaign, which encourages both retired and current faculty and staff members to give back to Pittsburg State by supporting the program or fund of their choice. The campaign, which is also being chaired by Karen Lasota, administrative assistant for the College of Education, and Dr. Charlene Lingo, professor emeritus of the Department of Special Services and Leadership Studies, runs through June 30, 2011.
"The theme is about one person making a difference and changing the campus and community," said Holly Kent, director of annual giving, emceeing the kickoff ceremony on Cleveland Plaza. "Supporting the university helps students grow - it helps them become more productive students and better citizens."
With nearly 500 individual gifts and more than $250,000 contributed by faculty and staff during the 2009 campaign (more than 230 employees have already made gifts for 2010), annual gifts can create a legacy. Dr. Ray C. Baird, a former vice president of PSU who passed away last April, made one final gift to the university through his estate this summer. That gift was his 30th consecutive annual contribution to the university, according to Shawn Naccarato, director of planned giving.
Among the 24 current and retired faculty and staff who are members of PSU's Heritage Society, Naccarato said, more than $1.2 million has been committed, primarily for student support.
"Think about that impact. Think about that legacy," he said.
For PSU President Steve Scott, the strength of support the campus receives from employees is remarkable.
"Who better knows the value of a Pittsburg State University education than the faculty and staff of this institution?" he asked. "The fact that we turn around and give back is very meaningful. By giving, we are helping to strengthen our entire university community and helping build a strong future for our campus."
