An effort to find new homes for the items students leave behind will take place this week through the annual "Move Out Madness" sale, organized by Pittsburg State's University Committee for Energy Resource and Conservation.
The sale will take place Saturday, June 12, a the SEK Recycling Center in Pittsburg. A pre-sale will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, June 11, for the center's staff as well as PSU students, faculty and staff. The Saturday sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will be open to the public.
The Move Out Madness sale was created last year as a way to reuse items that students left behind after moving out of the residence halls. Members of UCERC made the rounds on campus again last month, collecting gently used items such as furniture, clothing, dishes, electronics, and bedding that students wished to donate.
"In the past, dumpsters had been overflowing with items that were often in perfectly good shape," said Jon Bartlow, chairman of UCERC. "This is a sustainability effort to keep items out of landfills, give them new homes, and raise funds for ongoing sustainability efforts on campus."
Last year's sale netted more than $800 for the committee's sustainability efforts. This year, Bartlow said, the sale will feature about 50 percent more items than the year before.
