The three co-chairpersons of Pittsburg State University's 2009 Faculty-Staff Campaign presented a check for $53,274.24 to President Steve Scott on Wednesday, representing what has been donated so far in this year's campaign. Melinda Roelfs, director of admission; Forrest Coltharp, professor emeritus from the Department of Mathematics; and Barb Barto, an administrative specialist from the student center, made the presentation.
Scott Roberts, director of development, said PSU faculty and staff are committed donors because they see first-hand both the needs on campus and the differences their gifts make. Last year, he said, PSU faculty and staff gave more than $250,000 to the university.
In accepting the check, President Scott said the fact that PSU employees give to support the students and programs at the university is important as the university solicits support from other groups.
"The kind of private support we get from our employees sends a great message," Scott said.
He also talked about the importance of giving regularly over time, which, he said, allows donors to give more than they could at any single time.
The president added that private giving is especially important in the current economic times.
"Times are tough," he said, "tough for students and tough for departments."
The Faculty-Staff Campaign is continuing and donations and pledges are still being accepted. To give or obtain a pledge card, contact University Development at 620-235-4768.
