Scholarship surprise for 50 students
08/11/2009
Fifty Pittsburg State University students are going to get a $1,000 surprise this fall, thanks to an anonymous donor. Director of Development Scott Roberts said today that the university has received a $50,000 gift that is to be used for students who typically don't get the large scholarships.
"One of the unique things about this gift," Roberts said, "is that it is designated for students who don't usually get a great deal of scholarship aid. There are many good students who have solid but not stellar academic records and the donor was clear that the intention was to help these deserving students."
The donor has also indicated that the preference for awarding the scholarships be for students from Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. Recipients will be selected from those who have already applied through the university's scholarship application process.
"This kind of gift can make a huge difference for a student and that was a primary motivation on the part of the donors," Roberts said. "They understand that gifts like theirs may make it possible for some students to fulfill their dreams of a college education."
