PSU prepares for new academic year

As the final days of summer slip away, Pittsburg State University is busy preparing for the beginning of a new academic year.

Classes begin at PSU on Monday, Aug. 22. According to Lee Christensen, associate vice president for academic programs, the advent of online enrollment has dramatically changed the beginning of a new semester.

"Most alumni remember the long lines to enroll in classes and the frustration that went along with closed classes and class conflicts," Christensen said. "Today, students, in consultation with their academic advisers, are able to enroll from any networked computer anywhere in the world."

Christensen said the university’s official enrollment day, which is Friday, Aug. 19, will be a much less stressful day for students, faculty and staff as a result of online technology.

Christensen said it is not too late for students to enroll. For questions about admission to the university or enrollment, persons may call the Office of Admission at 620-235-4251 or visit them on the Web at <www.pittstate.edu/admit/>.
The university’s residence halls will open for new students to move in at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20. Housing Director Connie Malle said the residents halls will be full this fall, with more than 1,100 students expected to live on campus this year.

"We have had to do some juggling to accommodate the demand," Malle said.

To welcome the residence hall students and their families and to take a little of the stress out of moving day, the Housing Office will host "Gorilla Neighborhood," an indoor picnic at 4:30 on Aug. 20, in Gibson Dining Hall. Gorilla Neighborhood will include food, music and prizes and the housing staff will be available to answer questions for residents and their families.

For information about University Housing, please call the Office of University Housing at 620-235-4245 or visit them on the Web at <www.pittstate.edu/house/>.
