Crimson Village ready for occupants

The first residents of Pittsburg State University’s Crimson Village apartments have already moved in, but the university is still taking applications, according to PSU’s Housing Office. The newly renovated apartments are available to married students, families and single parents. Residents must be full-time PSU students with families and meet federal HUD income eligibility requirements.

Crimson Village is the former Bonita Terrace apartments, which were constructed by a private developer in 1980 to serve persons meeting federal low- and moderate-income guidelines. The Department of Housing and Urban Development foreclosed on the property in 2003 and transferred the title to the City of Pittsburg with the understanding that the property must continue to serve low- and moderate-income tenants. In 2003, the City of Pittsburg sold the property for $10 to PSU.

After acquiring the property, PSU embarked on a $1.2 million renovation of the apartments with the goal of having the apartments ready for occupancy in advance of the 2005 fall semester. Most of the work in the 40 two- and three-bedroom apartments was done by PSU Physical Plant employees. In addition to cosmetic improvements, the apartments received, new insulation, lighting, plumbing, HVAC, and appliances. Brightly colored playground equipment has been added and new landscaping has been installed.

Applications are available in the PSU Housing Office in 209 Horace Mann. Interested persons may call the office at 620-235-4245 or they may visit the Web site at <www.pittstate.edu/house>.
