Scholarship Information:

For those who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan the Kansas Board of Regents has a scholarship that pays tuition.  For eligibility requirements and application see www.kansasregents.org.

 All current and past veterans, active duty, national guard or reservists can apply for a PSU veteran’s scholarship by filling out the FAFSA and scholarship application.  This is a limited scholarship based on financial need.

 

The following groups of students may be eligible for educational benefits: 

Chapter 30:  Active Duty

Eligibility:                   2 years active duty, 3 years active duty, or 2 years active & 4 years selected reserve.  Must have contributed $100 a month for first 12 months enlisted.

Delimiting Date:         10 years after discharge.

Entitlement:                36 months full time
                                 $1111 per month for those with 2 years service
                                 $1368 per month for those with 3 years service or 2 years service + 4
                                  years reserve.                                       

Tuition:                      Student is responsible for paying his own tuition and books by due
                                 date. 

Chapter 31:  Voc Rehab

Eligibility:                   Must have a 20% or more service-connected disability, which causes a demonstrable employment handicap.  Veterans with a 10% disability may also be found eligible if they have a serious employment handicap.

Delimiting Date:         Later of 12 years from last separation from active duty or from date service connection is established.

Entitlement:                Generally cannot exceed 48 months.
                                 $541.05 per month – for 1 person, more for dependents

Tuition:                      Tuition, books, and $25 for supplies are paid by the VA 

Chapter 35:  Dependents and Survivors

Eligibility:                   Spouse, child, or stepchild of a veteran with permanent and total service connected disability or whose death was service connected; or who died of any cause while rated as having a permanent and total service connected disability.

Delimiting Date:         Spouse:  Later of 10 years from P&T/SC rating or death

                                 Child:  Later of 26th birthday or 8 years from date eligibility
                                 established.  Not to exceed 31st birthday.          

Entitlement:                45 months full time
                                 $925.00 per month

Tuition:                      Student is responsible for paying tuition and books by due date. 

Chapter 1606:  Guards and Reservists

Eligibility:                   An active reservist or national guard person who has completed AIT.

Delimiting Date:         14 years from date of eligibility

Entitlement:                36 months full time
                                 $333.00 per month

Tuition:                       Student is responsible for paying tuition and books by due date. 

Chapter 1607 (REAP):  Guards and Reserves

Eligibility:                   A member of a reserve component who serves on active duty on or after 9/11/2001 under title 10 US Code for a contingency operation and who serves at least 90 consecutive days or more is eligible for chapter 1607.

Delimiting Date:         None.  Eligibility ends on the date of separation from the Selected Reserve or the date of separation from the Ready Reserve.

Entitlement:                 36 months full time (plus 12 months under chapter 1606.

                                  $547.20 for those serving 90-364 days
                                  $820.80 for those serving 365 days to less than 2 years
                                  $1094.40 for those serving two years or more.

Tuition:                      Student is responsible for paying tuition and books by due date. 

Chapter 33:  GI Bill for the 21st Century (starts fall 2009)

Eligibility:                   Must have served at least 3 months active duty since 9/11/2001.  Past service members must have received an honorable discharge.  Veterans who served at least 30 days of active duty service and were discharged due to a service connected disability qualify for the full 100% of the GI Bill.  No cost to buy in to this GI Bill.

Delimiting Date:         15 years from date of separation from active duty.

Entitlement:                36 months full time.  Students relocating from a rural area may be eligible for a one time payment of $500.  For the full benefit you must have served 3 years active duty.  If less than 3 years, the following chart applies:

90 consecutive days............................. 40% tuition, books & living stipend
6 cumulative months............................. 50% tuition, books & living stipend
12 cumulative months........................... 60% tuition, books & living stipend
18 cumulative months........................... 70% tuition, books & living stipend
24 cumulative months........................... 80% tuition, books & living stipend
30 cumulative months........................... 90% tuition, books & living stipend
36 cumulative months........................... 100% tuition, books & living stipend

Transferability:           Active duty, National Guard and reserve members with 6 years of service could transfer their full GI Bill benefits to their spouses after agreeing to serve at least 4 more years.  A service member would have to complete 10 years of service before being allowed to transfer benefits to children.

Tuition:                      Paid for by the GI Bill according to above chart. Book allowance of up to $1000 per year.

To apply for chapter 30, 33, or 1607, please bring your DD214 and bank account information if you want your check direct deposited.

To apply for chapter 1606, please bring your NOBE and bank account information if you want your check direct deposited.

To apply for chapter 35, please bring your parent or spouse's file number and SSN.  Direct deposit is not available.

Military Credit:

Federal law requires institutions to readmit veterans who left in order to perfom military service to be readmitted with the same academic status he or she had when last in attendance .

PSU awards credit as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE), as published in "The Guide to the Evaluation of Military Experiences in the Armed Services," for selected educational experiences provided by the armed forces.

PSU will grant 2 credit hours in lifetime fitness for completing basic training by submitting a copy of your DD-214 discharge papers.  Some credit may be awarded for military courses; submit an AARTS or SMART transcript for evaluation.  No credit will be awarded for job experience.
