MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of the Department of Art is to enliven and enrich literacy in the visual arts through the advanced thought and perception of its students and its faculty. The intent of the department is to develop innovative approaches to the making and comprehension of works of art which elaborate upon the complexities of contemporary society. Works of art clarify and give meaning to the circumstances within which each person can find himself/herself and can sustain personal inquiry into the nature of being and becoming. The study of art strengthens the creative process and produces artistic products that reflect these inquiries.
Each studio discipline and area of art study contributes to the solution of and encourages students to approach and resolve aesthetic, intellectual, and technical problems with scholarly analysis and experimentation, informed discrimination, and environmental awareness. The Department of Art encourages students to develop a highly professional attitude toward their work and the solution of significant creative problems.

Special Department Requirements
All graduating art majors in the Department of Art degree programs are to participate in a group senior exhibition or portfolio exhibition at the conclusion of their program of study. It is recommended that the students enroll inART 490 Senior Exhibit, 1 credit hour, during the last semester of their undergraduate degree. Enrollment inART 490 Senior Exhibit is restricted to art degree earning students only.
In many studio art courses, students should be prepared to allocate time to accomplish class assignments outside of the scheduled art class. Such work is done in addition to that of the scheduled class which students are required to attend.
Minor in Art
(Non-Teacher Certification Minor)
The minor in art provides a student a minimum curriculum to develop both creative and technical skills that would be applicable to many related fields such as commercial art, photography, home economics, industrial education, recreation therapies, public relations, etc.
To earn the minor in art, the student completes 24 credit hours in art. In meeting this requirement, the students may elect to take any art courses offered by the Department of Art. Art faculty will advise students concerning art courses appropriate for specific majors and career goals.
This minor in art does not meet certification requirements to teach art in the state of Kansas.
Second Teaching Option
(K-12 Art Teaching Certification)
The second teaching option is designed for those education majors who wish to be certified to teach in a second subject area (art teacher). The second teaching option curriculum provides a course of study to develop a broad knowledge of art education principles and to gain creative and technical skills to teach art K-12. This curriculum is designed to meet state certification standards in art and is available to those students who have or are completing a certification program in another (first or primary) teaching area. Students who choose to pursue the second teaching option program are to complete all required art courses listed in the catalog under the B.S.E.D. A cumulative 2.5000 grade point average is required in all courses attempted in the required art course listing. Normally, students will need to plan to complete some of the second teaching option program with further enrollment (i.e., summer session, etc.) beyond the 124 credit hour minimum degree for the primary major.
The Department of Art recommends that education majors (non-art majors) who are preparing for K-12 teaching elect to complete course ART 311 Art Education, 3 credit hours.
Students are advised to contact the Associate Dean, College of Education, for clarification of all requirements for teacher certification programs.
