Language & Culture Short-Term English Program

Are you looking for a short-term study abroad experience in the U.S.? Do you want to improve your English language skills and learn about American culture?

This four-week all-inclusive Short-Term English Program on the beautiful campus of Pittsburg State University will enhance your learning of English as a second language in a total immersion of both language and culture. The fun and friendly staff make this a great opportunity to improve your English language skills, experience American culture, and make friends from all over the world!

Participants will have about 3.5 hours of English classes per day, social activities, and a planned cultural field trip. In addition, participants will stay on campus in the university dormitories and can enjoy all the campus amenities. 

We welcome anyone who has the desire to learn or improve their English skills...students who have completed high school, students studying at university, professionals in the workforce, or the person looking for a short-term study abroad experience.

This is a non-credit recreational English program. Participants will receive a certificate of participation.

English Courses

Participants will participate in 3.5 hours of English classes per day (17 hours per week) at an intermediate level in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Activities and Trips

Participants will participate in a variety social activities, cultural field trip, and experience a U.S. college campus environment.

Program fee includes the following:

  • English classes in reading, writing, listening, and speaking
  • On-campus housing 
  • Most Meals
  • Books
  • Health insurance
  • Off-campus cultural field trip and activities
  • Access to the Student Health Center
  • Access to the Student Recreation Center (gym, exercise equipment, swimming pool)
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off (from JLN)

Expenses not included in the program fee: travel expenses (airfare), visa fees, early check-in, additional meals, shopping/souvenirs.

Housing and Meals

Participants will stay on-campus in the university dormitories. Participants will need to bring or purchase their own pillow, sheets and blankets.

Participants must complete a separate housing application to reserve a room. Participants must abide by the University Housing terms and conditions in the housing contract. Cancellation fees may apply.

Participants will have most meals provided. 

Airport Pick-up & Drop-Off

Participants will be picked-up and dropped-off at the Joplin Regional Airport (JLN). All flights to Joplin Regional Airport come through Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on American Airlines.

Application Information

Language & Culture Short Term English Program registration:

  1. Complete the registration form
  2. Pay the full program deposit (instructions will be provided)
  3. Submit a copy of your passport to i-admit@pittstate.edu

On-Campus Housing reservation:

  1. Complete the housing reservation form
    (You must first be assigned a PSU ID number and password before you can apply for housing)

Airport Pick-up reservation:

  1. Complete the airport shuttle reservation form

Apply for U.S. visa:

  1. Participants may join the program on a B-1/B-2 (tourist) visa.

Program Fee Deposit: Registration is not complete until the full deposit is paid and must be paid by the registration deadline. Payment can be paid by check (bank draft) by mail or by wire transfer (participant is responsible for paying any processing fees for the wire transfer). Deposit will be refunded if the participant is denied a visa (written proof required).

Cancellation Fee: There is a $200 cancellation fee.

No application fee! No TOEFL required!

To be eligible, participants must be at least 18 years old or have graduated high school before the start of this program.

Participants must have at least a low-intermediate (basic) knowledge of the English language.

Seats for this program are limited to the first 20 registrants. Early registration is recommended.

The Language and Culture Short Term English Program is not the Intensive English Program and cannot be used for admission into an academic program.
