Desktop Emergency Alert System Feature
Pittsburg State University will be adopting a new emergency alert system. In the event of an emergency, notifications will be sent out using various methods. These could include email messages, voice messages and/or text messaging. You can view your various contact methods by logging into GUS, select Personal Information, then click the link titled “Emergency Alert System”. A new feature that may be used is a desktop emergency notification.
Using the desktop emergency notification, an alert may be sent to all campus computers, which are part of Active Directory. On campus-owned computers which are on Active Directory a full-screen alert will appear. The alert sent from the emergency alert system shows up through Alertus Desktop Alert, an emergency notification software that is being installed on all faculty and staff computers as well as classroom and lab computers, that are on active directory. When an alert occurs, the Alertus notification will appear "on top" of whatever you were doing on your computer. No data will be lost. No programs will be shut down. When you acknowledge the alert, the notice will disappear and you will be able to go back to whatever you may have been working on. Alertus will be used to notify the campus of issues affecting safety, health or well-being such as a weather alerts, building evacuation, etc. No personal information is gathered or transmitted.
The Alertus application will install automatically. For this to occur, your computer must have Active Directory installed. If you do not have Active Directory installed on your computer, please contact your Technical Support Consultant.
For PC users, the Alertus icon will be located on the right-side of your taskbar (at the bottom).
For Mac users, the Alertus icon will be located on the right-side of your menu bar (at the top).
A yellow icon in your task/menu bar means that the desktop agent is installed and actively communicating with the desktop notification server and will receive emergency alerts
A red icon in your task/menu bar means that the desktop agent is installed on your computer but is not in contact with the desktop notification server. Your computer will NOT receive emergency alerts. However, when you computer is connected to the campus domain the icon will change to yellow and will receive emergency notifications
***If you un-check the "load at startup" option for Alertus, the program will be installed but not active. You will NOT receive emergency alerts.
If you don’t see an icon in your task/menu bar at all that means that the agent is NOT installed on your computer and you will not receive emergency desktop alerts at all. If you don't see the Alertus icon, try restarting your computer. If you still don't see the icon contact your Technical Support Consultant. You must have Active Directory installed to access the Alertus app. If Active Directory is installed on your computer, the Alertus app will download and install automatically.
