Why It’s Needed
Affordable health care
The health center does not refuse treatment to anyone based on ability to pay. Two-thirds of PSU students have either no insurance or are underinsured. For a significant number of PSU students, the health center is the only health care they will have access to during their college years.
Looking to the future
The growth in enrollment and addition of staff and equipment has resulted in significant inadequacies of the physical space housing the current operations. A new student health center would allow PSU to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for health care services by students.
Current separation of services
Student Health Services and University Counseling Services are currently two separate operations housed in different parts of the university. The proposed student health center would allow those two services to be brought under one roof once again, achieving operational efficiency and allowing physicians and staff to easily consult one another on cases, as well as increase awareness about the services available to students.
How it’s funded
The funds to build the health center will come from a mix of private gifts and students fees. The university’s goal is to raise the entire project cost of 4 million from private gifts. However, because of the necessity to move the project forward, the university asked for the support of $12 per student each semester. AS private gifts increase, this student fee will decrease or be eliminated.
