Early Friday, October 9th the NASA Satellite LCROSS crashed into the moons surface moving 1.5 miles a second. (Thats more than twice the speed of most bullets) However it was all part of the plan, LCROSS stands for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite. The idea behind the mission was to orbit the Earth and the Moon for a while then after enough data had been gathered that way they satellite would impact the moon and gather data about the debris field looking for water ice. The mission was selected in April 2006 and was in development until June 18 2009 and orbited the earth for 113 days until NASA gave it the go ahead to plunge into the Cabeus crater on the moons surface. The satellite split into two different objects. One of the peaces was call Centaur and it was the first to strike while the LCROSS followed it in and collected data from the could of debris that was generated by Centaur, then five minutes later LCROSS also smashed into the lunar surface. However NASA says that they still got a rich amount of data, that their team cant wait to dive into. However they did say that it would take several weeks to get a complete analysis of the data. So we have that to look forward to. Water on the moon could mean that a Lunar colony is a much larger possibility.
