All About On-Campus Employment
On-campus employment is a great option for many students looking for part-time employment. It certainly has its benefits.
Here are just a few:
- Flexible hours that will often work around your class schedule
- Diverse experiences you may not be offered elsewhere
- Responsibilities and skills that will look great on a resume
- Most jobs on-campus have a "regular" work day of 8am to 4:30pm
- Networking with professionals that could prove beneficial after graduation
There are, however, a few things to remember about on-campus employment:
- An undergrad must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) hours per semester to be employed on-campus
- A graduate student must be enrolled in a minimum of three (3) hours per semester to be employed in a regular student employment position on-campus
- To be employed as a graduate assistant a graduate student must be enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) hours per semester
- University policy limits each student to 20 work hour per week while classes are in session
- Many offices are closed or in reduced force during periods when classes are not in session
- Some jobs are not limited to a "regular" work day . . . certain jobs require evening and/or weekend hours

The ABC's of Work Study
Perhaps one of the most commonly misunderstood concepts of student employment is that of work study. The following information should give you a basic understanding of work study. For more information contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
How do I qualify for Work Study?
Work Study is not something that everyone qualifies for. It is awarded as determined by your financial need based on your FAFSA. The Work Study program is federally funded so the award is not determined by the financial aid counselors on our campus.
I qualify for Work Study, how do I get my money?
This is the part that confuses most people. Being awarded Work Study on your financial aid package DOES NOT guarantee you a job. You will need to apply for positions just as everyone else does. Once you obtain an on-campus job or another work-study approved position, you will recieve a pay check every two weeks just like any other University employee.
Then what's the point? How does Work Study help me?
The number one way Work Study can help you is by allowing you to earn weekly (or bi-weekly) income that is considered to be financial assistance. What this means is that when completing the FAFSA for the next academic year, the money you have earned from your work study position will not have to be claimed as income and may, in fact, show additional financial need.
Another benefit is that because the Federal College Work Study program is supported by Federal funds, on-campus employers are attracted to hiring work study eligible students -- those students esentially do not "cost" the department or office "their own" operating money. Some jobs on-campus actually require you to be eligible for Work Study before you can even apply. So, it is always good to list on your resume that you are work study eligible, but it is more important to have a great resume in general!

I Got An On-Campus Job, So Now What?
If you have obtained an on-campus job there are still a few more steps you need to take in order to complete your employment process. Once you have confirmed your appointment with your supervisor, you should:
-
Bring documents establishing your identity and employment eligibility to the Student Employment office at 202 Horace Mann. Find a complete list of those documents here: I-9 Acceptable Documents.
-
Complete the appropriate paperwork at the Student Employment office -- you will have to complete tax information. So it may be useful if you already know your claiming status.
- If you wish to have direct deposit you will need to bring a voided check or a deposit slip to 202 Horace Mann. A bank or debit card will not work!
