Active: A fully initiated member of a fraternity/Sorority
Alumni/Alumna: An initiated member who is no longer in college
Advisors Alumna: Alumna who bring experience and guidance to collegians
Bid: A formal invitation to pledge a fraternity/sorority
Chapter: The local group of the larger (international organization, represented by a special Greek-letter name.
Formal Recruitment: The recruitment period set aside by Panhellenic Council/Interfraternity Council for membership selection
Fraternity: A Greek letter brotherhood; the term 'fraternity' often applies to a sorority.
Initiation: The formal ceremony during which a new member begins full membership in a fraternity/sorority.
Legacy: A potential new member who has a close relative who is a member of a sorority.
New Member: A person who have accepted a bid but not yet been initiated.
Philanthropy: Projects sponsored by Greek chapters to raise money for charitable organizations.
Potential New Member: A full-time PSU students interested in joining a Greek-letter organization.
New Member Period: A time during which new members learn about the Greek chapter and its members.
Quota: The specified number of new members each chapter can accept during formal recruitment.
Reference Letter/Recommendation: A letter signed by an alumni/alumna recommending an individual for membership. These letters are not required for PSU recruitment.
Run-Out: An event involving two or more Greek-letter organizations.
Recruitment: The mutually selective process by which potential members and fraternity/sorority members get to know each other.
Recruitment Counselor (Rho Gamma): A sorority member who has disaffiliated from her sorority during recruitment week to assist female students interested in recruitment.
Sororities: A Greek letter sisterhood; sometimes referred to as women's fraternities.
