Bluebeard in fairy tales (and music and art and film…)
Casie Hermansson, Professor of English at Pittsburg State University, is completing her second book, Bluebeard: A Reader's Guide to the English Tradition, on the use of the Bluebeard fairy tale in English literature. The book is under contract with University of Mississippi Press.
"In addition to literature," says Hermansson, "the book studies the use of the Bluebeard fairy tale (wife murder) in music, art and film over the past three hundred years."
Dr. Hermansson has done research in the United States, Great Britain, and Continental Europe. She travelled in December to consult with and present a paper to other internationally renowned Bluebeard scholars at the first ever International Conference on Bluebeard.
The research led Hermansson to rare book libraries such as the British Library in London, and collections in Toronto, Indiana, and Boston.
The colloquium in December was at the invitation of the University of Zurich, where eighteen world-renown scholars who have published on the topic were gathered and hosted to talk Bluebeard among themselves.
The book will be out in 2009.
