On the Actuarial Trail
Jennifer Fowler Jabben grew up in Pittsburg and came to PSU originally to become a teacher, but fate had other plans. Graduating in 2003, she passed the exam to be become an associate of the casualty actuarial society in 2008. She was honored this year as speaker at Pittsburg State University's Math Honor Day.
The Actuarial emphasis in Mathematics is interdisciplinary, mixing the technical knowledge of mathematics with that of business.
"The pure mathematics degree prepared me for some of the more technical pricing work," says Jabben. "It also gave me the ability to apply logical thought processes to business problems.
The mathematics also helped with the technical mathematics associated with the notoriously difficult actuarial exams.
"My economics minor was also valuable in exams as well," she continues, "along with the underlying business skills."
Most valuable though has been her ability to interact and work with her business partners. Here she gives credit to her co-curricular activities.
"I developed these skills through opportunities working on campus, student organizations, and the Crimson and Gold dance team," she says. She was a member of the Crimson and Gold Dance Team for four years.
Jennifer was promoted to Assistant Actuary after the ASCA qualification and worked as Pricing Manager of the Encompass Brand, which is Allstate's Independent Agency Brand, for 11 states: Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Nevada, Utah, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
