Students learn from the best at Midwest Trumpet Festival

Students at the Midwest Trumpet Festival said they were both learning and having a lot of fun Monday. The annual festival brings together students and some of the top trumpet players in the U.S.

Brittany Terwey, a senior music education major from Northwest Missouri State University, was having fun at the Midwest Trumpet Festival Monday. This was Terwey’s third year to attend the festival and it’s something she said she looks forward to each year.

“The school pays to send us each year,” Terwey said. “The entire trumpet ensemble is down here.”

Terwey said the workshops and concerts are not only an educational experience, but also entertaining.

Festival Director Todd Hastings said the success of the festival is due in large part to the talented musicians the event attracts. This year’s guest artists included international trumpet soloist and jazz artist, Byron Stripling; and Ryan Anthony, principal trumpet for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

“These men are not only great musicians,” Hastings said, “They are also great teachers who are dedicated to helping the next generation of trumpet players.”
