A record number of students are enrolled at Pittsburg State University this spring, according to figures compiled by the PSU Registrar’s Office. PSU officials announced this week that 6,815 students are enrolled for the spring semester, which is 61 more than spring 2011. This is the eighth consecutive spring semester that enrollment has risen at PSU.
Dr. Bill Ivy, associate vice president for enrollment management and student success, said he was particularly pleased to see a 12 percent increase in new undergraduate transfer students and an almost 8 percent increase in new freshmen.
Undergraduate enrollment for both Kansas students and students in the Gorilla Advantage Program was up 3 percent and 2.6 percent respectively.
Ivy said a variety of factors, including specific academic programs and a welcoming campus atmosphere are important in the university’s growth. He said the university’s comparatively low tuition and scholarships also influence students to choose PSU.
“Increasing scholarships has been a major goal for Pittsburg State,” Ivy said. “Additionally, we have worked to make scholarships available for a broader range of students.”
