Pittsburg State University announced its 2011 Student Employee of the Year winners Monday in a ceremony designed to honor the hundreds of student employees who work both on and off campus. This year's campus Student Employee of the Year is Jessica Hicks of Lenexa, Kan. Hicks is a graduate management and marketing major who works in the College of Business Office.
The university also recognized its top student employee who works off-campus. This year's Community Student Employee of the Year is Emily Eddy, a junior education major from Osceola, Iowa. Eddy works for Cornerstone Family Church where she is the learning center coordinator and teaches pre-kindergarten students.
"Hundreds of student employees work across the Pittsburg State University campus every day," said Mindy Cloninger, director of PSU 's Office of Career Services. "They are vital to the operation of the university and are often the first persons visitors meet. It is impossible to calculate their value to the university."
Students also benefit from their work experience on campus, Cloninger said.
"Learning doesn't stop at the classroom door," Cloninger said. "Students who work on campus learn practical and personal skills that help them prepare for the jobs they will fill after they graduate."
Cloninger said the Office of Career Services has expanded its recognition in recent years to include the many students who work off campus.
"Throughout the area, PSU students are working in a wide variety of roles," Cloninger said. "They learn so much from these experiences and employers tell us they are highly valued members of their teams. We are very fortunate to receive such enthusiastic support from the business community."
Four other student workers were recognized as first- and second-runners up in their respective categories. In the off-campus category, Brian Gustafson, who works at Crimson Villas Apartments, was the first runner up. Trevor Elliott, who works at the Family Resource Center, was second runner up. In the on-campus group, Brock Skaggs, who works in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, was first runner up. Kathleen Ismert, who works in the Office of International Programs, was second runner up.
At the conclusion of the event, Cloninger announced that as the campus Student Employee of the Year, Hicks' nomination had been submitted to the statewide organization that sponsors the competition and that she had been selected the 2011 Student Employee of the Year for the state of Kansas.
