Some of the nation’s best athletes on wheels will be at Pittsburg State University this weekend when PSU hosts the fourth annual Via Christi Home Medical Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament on Dec. 17-18. The event takes place in the Student Recreation Center at Ford and Rouse streets.

Dan Ferguson, a professor in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, said spectators who have not seen wheelchair basketball will be surprised at the pace and physical nature of the sport.

“These games are as fast-paced and exciting as traditional basketball,” Ferguson said.

The games will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, with the championship game scheduled to be played Sunday afternoon. Ferguson said 10 teams have signed up for the PSU tournament, including teams from Dallas and Southwest Minnesota State University that are new to the Gorilla Invitational.

The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.

Tournament sponsors include Via Christi; Southeast Kansas Independent Living (SKIL); the PSU Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation; and the Crawford County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
