Pittsburg State University honored all of its student employees on Monday, April 9, and named two as Student Employees of the year. Tracey Fienen, who works in the Office of Analysis, Planning and Assessment, was selected on-campus student employee of the year. Carrie Nelson, who works at Via Christi Village, was named off-campus student employee of the year.
Fienen, a senior marketing major from Independence, Kan., is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Fienen. Nelson, a senior nursing major from Jasper, Mo., is the daughter of Paul and Karen Nelson.
Fienen’s nominator called her “the brightest, most devoted and impressive student employee that I have had.” Nelson’s nominator praised her for her dedication to the residents of Via Christi Village, noting, “In the last two Christmases that [she] has been employed, she has bought gifts for every resident in the facility and passed them out.”
The Student Employee of the Year Awards are sponsored by PSU’s Office of Career Services. Director Mindy Cloninger said the estimated 1,000 students who work on campus, and the hundreds who work in businesses throughout the community and in the region provide valuable service at the same time they are learning life-long skills.
“PSU student employees play a very important role in the operation of the university,” said Cloninger. “I think some people are surprised when they learn of the responsibilities some students have.”
In the wider community, Cloninger said, PSU students are an important part of businesses’ day-to-day operation.
At the same time that students are helping to run offices on campus and businesses off campus, they are also learning skills that will serve them throughout their lives, Cloninger said.
“These real-world experiences are invaluable to students,” Cloninger said.
