Faculty and staff at Pittsburg State University will have an opportunity this week to learn about ways to deal with conflict and incivility in the workplace. “Building a Respectful and Collegial Environment: What every PSU employee should know about addressing disruptive and uncivil behavior,” will take place on Friday, Feb. 24, in the Governor’s Room of the Overman Student Center. Sessions will be held at 9 and 10:30 a.m. and at 1 p.m.
The workshops come at a time when an overwhelming majority of Americans believe the nation is becoming more uncivil and that the trend has serious implications for society (Weber/Shandwick 2010).
Sponsored by the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action and the Office of Human Resource Services, the workshops will feature Larry Rute, an experienced mediator and arbitrator with Associates in Dispute Resolution, LLC, from Topeka.
“Just about everyone, at some time, experiences disruptive or uncivil behavior that affects their work day,” said Cindy Johnson, director of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action. “These workshops will help employees identify behaviors that are disruptive and do not foster trust and collegiality and then provide guidance on how to address these behaviors in a positive way.”
