Enactus earns regional championship

The Pittsburg State Enactus team earned a spot in national competition after securing a regional championship earlier this month in Dallas.

As regional champs, the Pitt State team advances to the Enactus United States National Exposition, which takes place May 21-23 in Kansas City.

The competition includes both a written annual report and live audiovisual presentation, through which the teams report the results of the community outreach projects they have conducted. Panels of business leaders serve as judges.

“I'm incredibly proud of our Enactus team for making it this far and for having the chance to represent Pittsburg State at National Exposition,” said Enactus President Jeffrey Yankovich. “Our students have put countless volunteer hours into our projects that touch the lives of those around us. Our presentation team has had an unmatched dedication towards representing the outcome of that hard work, and they have done a stellar job of portraying it through competition.

This year, the Enactus group has focused on a variety of projects, including the ongoing Krimson Kultuur free trade store and the Community Employment Program, which helps teach employment skills to local residents.

New this year is a project to help develop a homeless shelter in Pittsburg. Enactus students are working with community officials to raise money and awareness about the homeless issue. They’re also working with the city to find an appropriate facility that would eventually be developed into a permanent homeless shelter.

The Enactus group is also working with local company Backyard Discovery on its mission to hire unemployed veterans. The company’s “Heroes for Hire” initiative aims to hire at least 100 veterans from across the country. The Enactus students are helping to develop a booklet that could be distributed at various vocational programs and optimal locations.

“The students have worked very hard on all the projects this year, as they always do,” said Enactus adviser Suzanne Hurt. “I’m very proud of the effort and time they put into their projects, and I’m excited to see them perform on the national stage.”
