This weekend's Family Day celebration at Pittsburg State University will recognize one area family that stands out for their support of PSU.
The Ivan Crossland family has been named PSU's Honorary Family for 2009. Mattie Crossland, the daughter of Ivan and Betty Lou Crossland of Columbus, Kan., nominated her family for the honor. Mattie is a freshman technology student at Pittsburg State.
"We are true Gorillas," Mattie said in her written nomination. "PSU is very dear in the hearts of my family. It's a personal asset to me to be able to attend and receive my education here."
The Honorary Family is selected from multiple nominations each year. The honor goes to a current student and their family, and includes being recognized at halftime at the home football game on Family Day.
Ivan and Betty Lou Crossland, of the Crossland Construction company, are both PSU graduates. Mattie wrote that while she initially kept an open mind about where to attend college, her parents "quietly cheered" for PSU. In her first semester, she is already involved in Campus Republicans and is chair of the Homecoming Committee. She also plans to join the Associated General Contractors student organization and the fashion merchandising student group.
"I have parents who go above and beyond to make sure that I am provided for and take advantage of every opportunity that crosses my path," she said. "They have taught (my brother and me) that trust, honesty, and hard work are the key values on which to base our lives."
