On Friday, May 13, a group of Pittsburg State University alumni will retrace steps they took 50 years ago as they march with members of the Class of 2011 in the commencement processional. Thirty-two members of the Class of 1961 are scheduled to participate in a variety of activities Thursday and Friday that celebrate their time on campus.
The reunion attendees will find a campus that is both familiar and very different from the one they left a half century ago. Enrollment has doubled since they graduated and the physical campus has changed dramatically. Icons like the Russ, McCray, Whitesitt and Porter Halls, however, still evoke powerful memories.
"The guided bus tours of the campus are always popular," said Johnna Schremmer, director of alumni and constituent relations. "The older buildings bring back lots of memories for the alumni but they also enjoy seeing the progress the university has made."
One high point of the reunion weekend is a luncheon on the Oval and the induction of the members of the Class of 1961 into the PSU Half-Century Club. Each new member receives a medallion that he or she then wears during the commencement ceremony.
In addition to the Class of 1961, members of the Classes of 1951 and 1956 are also having reunion events on Friday.
