Kids with a passion for building can take part in a fun competition this weekend that will put their skills to the test.

The 5th annual Block Kids Contest will take place this Saturday, Jan. 21, in Pittsburg State University’s Kansas Technology Center Rotunda. Sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction (Chapter #120) as well as the Department of Construction Management and Construction Engineering Technologies, the free event is open to area first through sixth graders. Registration begins at noon with the competition starting at 12:45 p.m. Winners will be announced at 2:45 p.m

Once registered, the children receive a packet of buildings odds and ends such as Legos, yarn, rocks, and aluminum foil. They can build anything they like as long as it’s construction-related Audo said past contestants have built structures like skyscrapers, houses and bridges. The winners receive prizes such as T-shirts and toolboxes.

“It’s a neat activity because it really gets kids to use their creativity and get interested in construction,” said Dennis Audo, assistant professor in the CMCET department at PSU. “We’re hoping it sparks their interest in the field.”
