Student groups at Pittsburg State University are doing their part to encourage others to be safe and responsible with a number of events planned for Alcohol Awareness Week, to be held from Oct. 6-10.
The theme for this year's events is "U Decide," which ties in with the week's message of personal responsibility for self-care as well as taking care of friends. Abstaining, not drinking to excess, using SafeRide or a designated driver after drinking, and not riding with a driver who has been drinking will be highlighted as ways students can decide to make healthy choices concerning alcohol.
An information table will be set up in the Overman Student Center all week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, students will be able to play "Alcohol Jeopardy" for prizes, as well as enter a contest to make the best SafeRide slogan.
At noon each day, students will be on the Oval, handing out free SafeRide koozies and Pepsi.
In addition, the following events are scheduled:
Wednesday, Oct. 8:
4:30 to 7 p.m. - With proof of their student ID, PSU students can mini-golf for free at Four Oaks Golf Course.
5 p.m. - A free barbecue will be held at Lincoln Park sponsored by GAMMA (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol).
Thursday, Oct. 9:
8 p.m. - Karaoke Night will be held in the U-Club downstairs in the Overman Student Center. Door prizes and Wal-Mart gift cards will be given away.
Alcohol Awareness Week is sponsored by Gorillas In Your Midst, GAMMA, SafeRide, the Substance Abuse Focus Group, Student Prevention and Wellness, Student Health Services, and Campus Activities.
