The Michael and Nancy Ford family of Iola, Kan., has been selected as Pittsburg State University's 2010 Honorary Family. The Fords, who were nominated by their daughter Madison, a PSU junior, will be honored during Family Day activities on Saturday, Sept. 18.
"Families play a bigger role in students' success than they sometimes realize," said PSU President Steve Scott. "Families, large and small and in many different configurations, provide the support and encouragement that often makes the difference between success and failure. We are happy to honor them on this special weekend."
In her nomination, Madison wrote, "From both of my parents, I have learned the importance of hard work and motivation. They both work extremely hard to provide for our family, and to set good examples for each of us. They have taught me to always strive to be my best and to never give up, even when those around you doubt what you can accomplish, it's important to always have faith in yourself.
"My family gives me the support that I need to get through ...We all lean on one another and work together to be one big happy family."
She also gave credit for inspiration to her older sister, Taylor, who is a proud PSU alumna.
"From her," Madison wrote, "I learned that school and academics are always first."
Madison's father, Michael, is a police officer in Iola and has been in law enforcement for 17 years. Her mother, Nancy, is the public relations director at Allen County Community College. In addition to older sister, Taylor, Madison has two younger sisters, McKinley and Reagan. Everyone in the family, Madison wrote, loves Pitt State.
At PSU, Madison is in the pre-med program. Although just 18, she is a junior, having graduated both from Iola High School and Allen County Community College in May. She is also a member of the PSU Spirit Squad, the Pre-Med Club and the Chemistry Club.
The Fords will be recognized at halftime of the football game with the University of Central Missouri, which begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Honorary Family Award is sponsored by the Pittsburg State University Foundation and the Advancement Ambassadors.
