David Hurley

Dr. David Ross Hurley, Associate Professor of Music History and Oboe, received his bachelors of music in music history from the University of Michigan (1980), and his masters of arts and Ph.D. degrees in music history and theory from the University of Chicago (1990, 1991). His research has focused primarily on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music.

His book Handel's Music: Patterns of Creation in his Oratorios and Musical Dramas, 1743-1751 was published by Oxford University Press. He has written articles and reviews for The Cambridge Companion to Handel, The Musical Quarterly,and Notes,among others. His oboe instructors have included Elaine Douvas, Robert Sorton, and Robert Morgan. He has performed in free-lance groups and as a recitalist in the Chicago area.
