Dr. Carol Deats teaches Children's Music, Elementary Music Methods, and Horn at Pittsburg State University. She earned Bachelor of Music degrees in Horn Performance and Music Education (magna cum laude) from Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts and completed the Master of Music degree in Horn Performance and Literature at Eastman School of Music. She received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. In addition to an all-level music teacher's certificate, she holds a Montessori certificate and has completed Level I training in Orff-Schulwerk at Southern Methodist University. Dr. Deats is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda.
Before coming to PSU, Mrs. Deats held adjunct teaching positions at Pennsylvania State University, Bucknell University, Midland College, and Howard College. She taught elementary music for a decade, in both public and private schools. During this time, she established in-school concerts and a Suzuki violin program. Dr. Deats also taught horn lessons to band students through the public school system. In addition, she conducted master classes and adjudicated solo and ensemble festivals and UIL competitions.
Dr. Deats is a professional horn player, having performed in solo, chamber, and orchestral venues throughout the United States and Italy. She recently performed at Carnegie and Avery Fischer Halls in New York City with the Permian High School Choir. She is featured on two compact disc recordings with the Lone Star Brass Quintet: Lone Star Christmas, and Western Fanfare.
