The 1st in state award in the 2003 American Mathematics Competitions through the 10th and 12th grades was given to: Nicholas Ma, from East High in Wichita, was first in state in the AMC 12 with a perfect score; and Wendy Zhang, from Indian Woods Middle School in Shawnee Mission, was first in Kansas on the AMC 10 with a perfect score. The 1st in state award in the 2002 AMC 8 competition was awarded to: Michael Batrick, an eighth grader from Indian Woods Middle School in Shawnee Mission, Patrick Montgomery, an eighth grader from Antioch Middle School in Shawnee Mission, Hiroki Okano, a seventh grader from Topeka Collegiate in Topeka, and Wendy Zhang, an eighth grader from Indian Woods Middle School in Shawnee Mission. All 4 have earned a perfect score on this year's competition.

The AMC 8, 10 and 12 are part of a sequence of mathematical competitions leading to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The United States placed second in the 1995 IMO, and Carl Bosley from Washburn Rural High School was a member of that winning team. Approximately a quarter of a million students from over five thousand schools worldwide annually participate in these mathematical competitions.

The AMC are sponsored by the nine professional organizations listed below. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed AMC on their national advisory list of contests and activities. The purpose of these contests is to spur interest in mathematics and develop problem solving ability through the excitement of friendly competition.

These competitions have been greatly appreciated by parents and teachers in the past. A parent called to thank us for directing the competition, as her son got into MIT based on his AMC scores.
