VPN Guidelines
- The employee requests a VPN account via GUS and approval by a departmental representative or the employee’s supervisor is required.
- User accounts will be created only at the request of a departmental representative or the employee’s supervisor by submitting the appropriate VPN access request form available on GUS.
- The Networking and Systems group is responsible for approving third party VPN requests.
- Accounts are typically created in 3-5 business days. Multiple requests may take longer to process. Urgent requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- Employee VPN accounts will expire after one year. Third party VPN accounts expire after 30 days.
- VPN accounts will be deleted, when: the user requests their account be deleted (via a GUS link), a departmental representative or the employee’s supervisor requests the account be deleted, when the user is no longer a PSU employee, or when an employee changes positions.
- VPN access does not, by itself, provide internet connectivity. Users are responsible for providing their own internet connectivity via dial-up, cable modem, DSL, or other means to use the PSU VPN.
- Currently, VPN software is available for Windows 2000 or later and Mac OS X.
- VPN users will be automatically disconnected from the VPN after 90 minutes of inactivity. The user must then reconnect to the VPN. Pings or other artificial network processes used to keep the connection open are not allowed.
- Only one active VPN connection is allowed per user and maximum connection time is limited to 24 hours.
- Using the VPN to access internet resources external to PSU is not recommended.
- The VPN is an IP only resource. Other protocols are not supported.
- Peer-to-peer software is not allowed over VPN.
- The first Thursday of every month between the hours of 5:45 am and 7:45 am is reserved for regularly scheduled maintenance. Emergency maintenance will be scheduled as needed.
