CULTIVATING SUCCESS: Why Belonging Matters

The Michael Tilford Conference on Diversity and Multiculturalism will be held at Pittsburg State University on October 24-25, 2016.

The conference provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and administrators at Kansas Regents' institutions to discuss diversity in higher education.

Goals of the conference:

  • Listening to visionary leaders who will inspire you to promote equity and awareness at your institution.
  • Participating in workshops to learn about challenges teaching diverse populations on Kansas campuses.
  • Sharing your passion for teaching and interacting with students regardless of race, gender, religion and national origin.

About the Michael Tilford Conference

The Michael Tilford Conference provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and administrators at the Kansas Board of Regents' institutions to approach diversity in higher education by examining the challenges and opportunities in Kansas including:

  • Inspire awareness of multiple dimensions of diversity, related practices of inclusion, and the transformation of higher education in Kansas.
  • Participate in workshops to learn about challenges and strategies for teaching diverse populations on Kansas campuses.
  • Share your passion for teaching and interacting with students from all backgrounds.

Michael TilfordThis conference is named in memory of the late Dr. Michael Tilford, who passed away on November 6, 1996. Dr. Tilford was the WSU representative on the Regents Diversity and Multiculturalism Committee from its onset in 1994 until his death.

In 1969, Dr. Tilford was one of 100 African-American educators from across the country who received Ford Foundation Grants for advanced graduate study. He received his doctorate from Oklahoma State University in 1970. Dr. Tilford also had a bachelor's degree from Langston University in mathematics/chemistry and a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in science education. He was appointed Dean of the Graduate School of WSU in 1988 and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1994. Dr. Tilford chaired many organizations, and his committee work showed his commitment to the education of students traditionally underrepresented at the university level.

In the 1970s, he served on a committee that developed a successful proposal for the minority studies program. Also, he helped conduct a study of the institutional commitment to minorities at WSU.

Institutional Acceptance and Legitimacy: The Twice-Annual, Campus-wide Cultural Competence Training at Butler Community College

Crystal Aluko, Academic Success Coach/Coordinator of Tutoring, Cory Teubner, Associate Professor, English/Personal Development Chair, Andy Jones, Associate Professor, English, and Donnie Featherston, Associate Professor, Religion and Philosophy

Butler Community College implemented a twice-annual, campus-wide Cultural Competence Training beginning in Spring 2016. This workshop will describe the training designed and implemented by Butler’s Inclusion Council; identify obstacles and successes encountered in pursuit of administrator, faculty, and staff buy-in; and model how other schools may learn from our success.

 

Engaging the Engine: Establishing Inclusive Teaching with New Teaching Assistants

Darren DeFrain, University Director of the Writing Program, Wichita State University

This workshop will focus on the challenges and importance of inculcating graduate teaching assistants with a strong understanding as to why diversity and multiculturalism are integral and essential. The workshop will include practical approaches to help graduate students understand and deal with the challenges of the contemporary classroom and to better understand how these efforts support improved student performance.


Thinking Outside the University: Shared Curriculum Programs for Increased Baccalaureate Degree Attainment

Pamela Barnes, PhD is an Associate Dean for Student Affairs and a Research Assistant Professor at the KU School of Nursing

Early results of the KU-Community College Nursing Partnership program signifies potential for increased baccalaureate degree attainment by under-represented student groups. The program’s development is explained followed by exercises for exploring university-community college partnership opportunities benefiting diverse student populations within the State’s community colleges.

 

Teaming for Diversity: Using team-based models and practices to advance organizational diversity and inclusion goals

Jennifer D. Keeton, EdD, Director of Special Programs and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Kansas Medical Center and W. Todd Moore, MPS, Project Director of Community Partnership for Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center

Learn about how cultivating a team mindset and behavioral practices can help advance your institutions goals to increase diversity and build a more inclusive climate. Through an interactive format, presenters will share the approach based on structured, action-oriented teams as well as “teamwork on the fly” to help overcome perennial hurdles.

 

Using Student Survey Data to Create an Inclusive University Environment 

Catherine Ayantoye, PhD, an Assistant Professor of Special Education at Emporia State University and Marla Darby, an Instructor of Special Education at Emporia State University.

This presentation’s two objectives are to first, share the process and outcomes of the inclusion survey given in ESU’s Teacher’s College, and second to have attendees and presenters share ideas and strategies that can be implemented to build campus communities where everyone feels a strong sense of belonging.

 

 

Teachable Moments: Strategies for Responding to Student Bias

Sandra Cox, PhD and James Greene, PhD Assistant Professors of English at Pittsburg State University

This workshop provides strategies for responding productively to expressions of social bias by students. The workshop will share contemporary research on the topic and then encourage conference attendees to discuss how they would respond to a series of hypothetical scenarios involving student biases.


The Emporia State Imperative: a Transformation of Inclusion

With an ever changing diverse global society and increased issues around institutional inequities, colleges and institutions of higher learning will need to evaluate their practices related to campus climate, diversity and inclusion issues and institutional initiatives that support campus inclusion and engagement. Under the direction of the Diversity and Inclusion Alliance and campus leadership, Emporia State University embarked on an comprehensive process to infuse inclusion throughout the entire university supporting students success. This model will be outlined in this interactive and engaging session.

 

Student Growth from Service Learning: Increasing Persistence in First-Generation College Students

Lisa Stoothoff, Director of Developmental Education at Donnelly College

The primary purpose of this 50 minute workshop is to provide pedagogy and research-based strategies when choosing a service learning project for first-generation college students. Participants will view components of service- learning and tailor a framework for their own student population.


Onboarding Underrepresented Students at the University of Kansas – Hawk Link and Multicultural Scholars Program

Lindsey Deaver, M.S.E., Director of the First Two Years in the Multicultural Scholars at University of Kansas.

The challenges of navigating college life can be greater for first generation, low income, and other students from underrepresented backgrounds. At KU, we have worked to reduce the stress and isolation of students in Hawk Link and MSP by developing hands-on onboarding programs. Our interactive workshop will share our onboarding programs and give the audience a chance to walk through students’ experiences with different onboarding programs.

marche fleming photoDr. Marché Fleming-Randle is a senior assistant dean for the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and assistant to the president for diversity. She is the college liaison for student services planning and implementation, encompassing undergraduate recruitment activity, the enrollment process, and matriculation to degree completion. She consults with faculty and students on academic issues, including administrative withdrawal, coordinating the representation of the college at admissions programs, representing the college with Kansas community colleges, and analyzing student data. She is also an Ethnic Studies lecturer. Her research and academic interests include mental health, substance abuse, child and youth programs, educational leadership, and diversity. She is an author, motivational speaker and public intellectual.

Dr. Fleming-Randle has  received a number of awards and honors for her efforts in diversity. She is a Fellow of WSU's Leadership Academy and was recognized in 2013 with a Unity Award for her commitment to diversity at Wichita State University.

Her publications include The Gumbo Analysis of Diversity Handbook; The Bold, Black and Beautiful; The Dreams Kings are Made of; and the Dr. Martin Luther King Handbook and many articles.

Dr. Fleming-Randle’s hobbies include listening to her favorite musician, Prince; bowling with friends; reading an enlightening book; talking with her father, James Sr., about social issues; and spending quality time with her husband, Aron, and her only sibling, James Jr. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

strayhorn photoDr. Terrell Lamont Strayhorn is Director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise at  Ohio State University, where he is also Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Studies within the College of Education and Human Ecology. Dr. Strayhorn is faculty affliate in the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity, the Todd A. Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male, the Criminal Justice Research Center, and Penn GSE Center for MSIs. He has faculty appointments in the Ohio State John Glenn College of Public Affairs, Department of African American and African Studies, and Education Policy, Engineering Education, and Sexuality Studies programs. Professor Strayhorn maintains an active and highly visible research agenda focusing on major policy issues in education: student access and achievement, equity and diversity, impact of college on students, and student learning and development.

An acclaimed higher education researcher and policy analyst, Dr. Strayhorn has authored 8 books and monographs including Evolving Challenges of Black College Students (Stylus Publishing, 2010), College Students’ Sense of Belonging (Routledge, 2012), and theoretical Frameworks in College Student Research (Rowman & Littlefeld, 2013); over 50 book chapters; and more than 100 refereed journal articles, reviews, and scientific reports. Named “one of the most highly visible new scholars in his field,” by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, Dr. Strayhorn has received numerous national awards and honors, including the ASHE Early Career/Promising Scholar Award, ACPA Annuit Coeptis Award, among others. Diverse Issues in Higher Education named him one of the nation’s Top 12 Diversity Scholars, BusinessFirst Magazine named him one of the “Top 20 to Know in Education,” and he was named an ACPA Diamond Honoree in 2014.
