General Information

Networking a Macintosh computer is a breeze. Just follow the two steps below and you will be surfing the web in no time. One difference to make sure and note is that the PSU ResNet requires Macintoshes to use a DHCP server to obtain an IP address. This is different than Windows machines that use a DHCP server.

Follow these steps for quick setup of Macintosh computers running OSX:

Check IP Settings. Because the PSU ResNet uses a DHCP server to handout IP addresses, it is VERY important that you not use a hard-coded IP address.

  1. Under the "Apple Menu", go to "System Preferences."
  2. Next, select "Network" from the "Internet and Network" group.
  3. Be sure to have "Built-in Ethernet" selected from the "Show" drop-down menu and click on "TCP/IP."
  4. In the "Configure" menu, select "Using DHCP."

Enable File Sharing. ***Note: This step is not necessary to gain access to the ResNet. Completing this step can create security holes in your system. If you plan on sharing files with other ResNet users, ALWAYS protect your files with passwords.***

  1. From the "System Preferences," select "Sharing."
  2. Click on "Personal File Sharing" to begin sharing files locally via AppleTalk.
