ACG and SMART Grant Information
On February 8, 2006, President Bush signed the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (HERA), Pub. L. 109-171. The changes made by HERA created two new grant programs, the Academic Competitiveness Grant and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant. These grants have been available to students beginning with the 2006-2007 award year.

Academic Competitiveness Grant Requirements

U.S. citizenship
-
Federal Pell Grant recipient
-
First or second year student in a degree program
-
Full-time enrollment
-
No specific major required
1st year students:
-
Must have successfully completed a rigorous school program of study; or a minimum of two AP (Advanced Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) courses in high school; or be a State Scholar as designated by the Department of Education

May not have been previously enrolled in a program of undergraduate education

Must have completed a secondary school program of study after January 1, 2006
2nd year students:

Must have completed a secondary school program of study after January 1, 2005

Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in a degree program

to Retain Talent Grant Requirements

Third- or fourth-year student in a four-year degree program

Full-time enrollment in an eligible major
