Lisa Marie Gerstenkorn has served as Adjunct Voice Instructor at Pittsburg State University since 2005. She also joined the Voice Faculty at Missouri Southern State University in 2013. She is a current member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a member of the music fraternity Pi Kappa Lambda.
Ms. Gerstenkorn enjoys performing a variety of repertoire including opera, art song, musical theatre, jazz, and sacred music. She has been a Young Artist with the Ohio Light Opera in Wooster, Ohio as well as with the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, Massachusetts and she made her Tulsa Opera solo debut as Sister Lillianne in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking. For three years, Lisa served as the alto soloist with the Mosaic Vocal Ensemble of Springfield, MO, singing multiple concerts throughout the Midwest. In 2014, she was the alto soloist for Beethoven’s Fantasia in C Minor with the Taneycomo Festival Orchestra. She often performs the solo works of Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and other early music composers.
Since 2012, she has enjoyed continuous Vocal study with Dr. Bill Hall of the American Opera Studio, with whom she frequently performs in Kansas City, MO. She will begin her tenth consecutive season singing with the professional chorus of the Tulsa Opera in Fall 2016. Additional performances for the 2016-2017 season will be with the Ozark Family Opera Company of Bentonville, AR and Heartland Opera Theatre of Joplin, MO.
Favorite operatic roles include Principessa in Suor Angelica, Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Little Buttercup in HMS Pinafore, Ruth in Pirates of Penzance, and the Witch in Hansel and Gretel. Musical theatre roles include Grace Farrell in Annie, Dominique du Monaco in Lucky $tiff, Glinda in the Wizard of Oz, and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ, Superstar.
Ms. Gerstenkorn holds a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Pittsburg State University. While studying, she received Outstanding Student Awards for Vocal Studies as well as Graduate Studies. She performed roles with the PSU Opera and PSU Theatre Department, and as a soloist with the PSU Jazz Band. Additionally, she was a semi-finalist in both the Classical and Musical Theatre categories of the West Central NATS competition. Now a member of the PSU Voice faculty, in addition to teaching, she has continued her involvement with the PSU Opera program both as assistant and performer.
Lisa has also been seen onstage with Shawnee Mission Theatre in the Park, Springfield Regional Opera, Pittsburg Community Theatre, Independence Community College Opera, and the Midwest Regional Ballet. She previously taught Voice at Kansas City Kansas Community College and served as the Vocal Director for the Pittsburg Community Theatre and Jr. Starz Children’s Drama Workshop. She enjoys teaching students of all ages in her thriving private Voice Studio in Pittsburg, KS and Joplin, MO. She travels throughout the area for teaching and performing, but resides in Pittsburg with her husband Brian O'Neill.
