Student Policies:

Honors Program

Revised July 1996

Eligibility and Requirements
English majors with an overall and departmental grade point average of 3.4 or higher are eligible to participate in the Departmental Honors Program. English courses numbered 300 to 799 (except ENGL 579 and independent study or readings courses) may be taken for Honors. Students enrolling in courses for Honors are expected to complete both the regularly assigned course work and additional work of a research nature above and beyond the regular classroom work. Students are normally allowed to enroll in only one course for Honors per academic term, though exceptions may be allowed by the Departmental Academic Honors Committee of the Faculty Senate. Students who complete at least two honors courses for a minimum of nine credit hours with grades of A or B and who maintain an overall and departmental grade point average of 3.4 or higher will graduate with the distinction of "With Departmental Academic Honors."

Project Criteria and Procedures

  1. The honors proposal will describe a substantial research project over and above the normal expectations of the course.
  2. Each honors project will require a 10–12 page paper and an oral presentation or a suitable alternative representing an equivalent set of requirements.
  3. The student and the classroom instructor complete and sign an Enrollment for Departmental Academic Honors form and submit it to the departmental chairperson for approval. A copy of the approved form is placed in the student's file. The student then returns the form to the appropriate person in the Registrar's office.
  4. Honors proposals are reviewed by the Departmental Academic Honors Committee of the Faculty Senate which accepts or rejects the proposals and notifies the department, the instructor, and the student. The registrar verifies the student's grade point average and maintains a file of accepted proposals for one year.
  5. Students can apply to the Departmental Academic Honors Committee for an honors scholarship to cover costs incurred while completing the honors project. Students who are already receiving a salary or stipend for assisting in funded studies are not eligible for honors scholarships.
  6. The student and the classroom instructor may invite other faculty to attend the oral presentation.
  7. To receive honors credit, the student must receive a grade of B or higher on the paper/project and in the course.
