Full-Time Faculty
The normal teaching load for full-time faculty is twelve credit hours (or four courses) per semester with three preparations. However, an assignment to teach four preparations is not unusual if programmatic
concerns necessitate. Faculty receive additional performance appraisal points for teaching four preparations a semester.
It is the policy of the department that faculty be assigned to teach no more than two writing courses (ENGL 101, 190, 299, 301, 302, 501, 503, 815, or Writing–to–Learn) per semester. Creative writing courses are not included in this restriction.
Faculty serving in the following positions are off-loaded one course per semester:
- Computer Coordinator
- Computer Classroom Supervisor (Fall only)
- Director of Composition
- Director of English Education
- Director of the Writing–to–Learn Program
- Director of the Writing Center
- Director of Technical Writing (Fall only)
- Director of Graduate Studies (Spring only)
Members of the graduate faculty are normally assigned to teach no more than one regular 800–level class per academic year. Exceptions to this restriction may be made only by agreement between the faculty member and the department chairperson. Directed study courses and thesis direction are not counted in this restriction.
Directed studies, thesis direction, and internship supervision are not counted in faculty load, but the faculty member earns performance appraisal points for them. Normally, faculty would not take on more than two of these additional teaching duties per semester.
Part–Time Faculty
Normally, part–time faculty will be assigned to teach no more than two sections of writing and/or general education literature courses per semester. Occasionally, on an emergency basis, with the approval of the
Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Dean of Arts and Sciences, part–time faculty may be asked to teach a third section for appropriate additional compensation.
Graduate Teaching Assistants
Normally, Graduate Teaching Assistants will be assigned to teach two sections of composition per semester (ENGL 101 in the fall and either ENGL 101 or 299 in the spring).
