Graduate Service and Graduate Faculty
Faculty teaching graduate courses must have been nominated and approved for graduate service or for graduate faculty status.

Graduate Service. The department chairperson, with the concurrence of a majority of department graduate faculty, nominates a faculty member for graduate service. Graduate service status is granted to a faculty member for the teaching of a specific 700 or 800-level course.

Graduate Faculty. The department chairperson, with the concurrence of a majority of the department graduate faculty, nominates a faculty member for graduate faculty status. Graduate faculty status carries with it the privilege of teaching graduate-level classes and the responsibility of directing theses, serving on thesis committees, and participating in all aspects of the governance and operation of the departmental graduate program (see the Committees section of this manual for a list and description of graduate committees). To be nominated for the graduate faculty, faculty usually

  • are tenure-earning or have tenure
  • have the terminal degree in their teaching area
  • have been teaching at Pittsburg State for one or more years
  • have successfully taught at the graduate level
or
  • are otherwise deemed necessary for the operation of the graduate program.

Nomination Process Nomination for graduate faculty status or for graduate service will consist of submitting a completed nomination form and a copy of the faculty member's curriculum vitae, including evidence of successful graduate teaching when appropriate. Nominees for graduate service will include a syllabus for the course they propose to teach. The nomination will be

  • approved by a majority vote of department graduate faculty
  • endorsed by the department chairperson
  • approved by the Dean of Arts and Sciences
  • sent on to the Graduate Dean (and the Dean of Continuing Studies if for graduate service to teach an off-campus course)
  • sent on to the Graduate Council for final approval.

The Graduate Dean may wish to interview the nominee.
