Standing Committees
In appointing department members to serve on the following standing committees, the department chairperson
takes into account the preferences of individuals and the needs of the department.
Normally, a person can expect to be appointed to serve on two or three standing committees each year.
The department chairperson serves as ex officio member of all standing committees.
The English Department maintains the following six standing committees:
1. Advisement and RecruitmentFunction:
- To coordinate departmental information with the Career Counseling and Placement Office.
- To provide activities that assist faculty with advising duties (such as occasional seminars on advising).
- To coordinate recruiting new students with the Admissions Office by providing the campus telephone committee with a prepared message and by following up on prospective students.
2. Curriculum and Assessment
Function:
- To consider changes in departmental curricula and prepare catalog descriptions.
- To monitor and modify, as necessary, program and writing skills assessment examinations and procedures.
3. Faculty Development and Course Evaluation
Function:
- To revise course evaluation instruments as necessary.
- To consider establishing a series of seminars for English faculty to present and attend for sharing of specialized knowledge.
- To encourage faculty research and creative work by circulating information about grants and publication opportunities.
- To act as custodians of faculty development resources, such as grant proposal guidelines and resource materials for teaching.
4. Honors and Scholarship
Function:
- To establish criteria for review and approval of Honors project proposals.
- To distribute scholarships.
- To deal with issues of academic honesty.
Function:
- To study ways in which the department may use computers, video equipment, interactive technologies, and other technologies in the classroom.
- To train faculty, part-time faculty, and teaching assistants how to use computers and other technologies for instruction.
- To recommend the purchase of computer programs, videotapes, or other media materials for the department.
6. Writing Programs Coordinating Committee
Membership:
The Director (or one of the Co-Directors) of Composition; the Director of Computers and Writing; the Director of Technical/Professional Writing; the Director of the Writing Center; the Writing Intensive Director; the current Advanced Composition 302 instructor; and one ENGL 190 instructor (if necessary)
Function:
- To coordinate needs, standards, and requirements of departmental writing courses and programs.
- To coordinate departmental and University writing courses and programs with the Writing Center.
- To coordinate departmental writing courses and programs with the University General Education Program.
- To coordinate departmental writing courses and programs with the Writing to Learn Program.
- To coordinate accreditation reviews with standards and requirements of departmental writing courses and programs.
