As a normal expectation of appointment, all instructors—full-time, part-time, and graduate teaching assistants—are required to attend regularly scheduled class sessions and examination periods for their assigned courses, posted office hours, and course or program meetings as occasionally scheduled, unless excused by course or program directors or the department chair.
Unless unavoidably detained, faculty are also expected to be on time for classes, office hours, appointments, and meetings.
Ordinarily, faculty are expected not to miss more than three MWF classes (or two TuTh classes) per course per semester, except in exceptional and unavoidable circumstances such as professional obligations or opportunities, illness, injury, or personal/family hardship.
Faculty who must miss one or more class sessions for professional or personal reasons must inform the department chairperson in advance and must fill out a Faculty Absence Form, which may be acquired from the department secretary.
Full-time faculty are also required to attend the following activities unless excused by the appropriate official:
- Advisement for fall and spring term pre-registration during office hours and at times scheduled in advance by students.
- Advisement for the registration day prior to fall, spring, and summer academic terms, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- The first faculty meeting of the academic year as called in August each year by the University President.
- College of Arts and Sciences faculty meetings as called by the Dean of the College.
- Departmental faculty meetings as called by the department chairperson.
- Committee meetings and course or program meetings as called by committee chairs and course or program directors.
- University Commencement.
