Introduction
English Department faculty, part-time faculty, and graduate assistants
may use departmental facilities,
equipment, and resources in the performance of their professional duties,
including all activities related to
teaching, research, writing, and service.
Instructors will at all times act to conserve and safeguard these departmental facilities, supplies, and resources for the overall good of the program. Any out-of-the-ordinary use should be cleared with the department chairperson in advance.
Computers
Full-time faculty have networked computers in their offices and some have printers. Faculty computers are
also connected by the network with the HP LaserJet 5 printer in 406 GH. The computers in graduate
assistant offices are not networked. Graduate students may take their materials on floppy disks to be
printed on the HP LaserJet 5 printer that is connected to the computers in 406 GH.
Computer Classroom
101 GH is the Computer Classroom and is available for use in teaching writing classes. The computer classroom is equipped with twenty-four PC computers,
six laser printers, and a scanner. The instructor's station is equipped with a computer and a projection
panel. All computers in the computer classroom are connected to the University computer network.
Instructors may individually use the facilities in the computer classroom when no class is in session.
Open-access computers are also available in computer labs in Yates Hall and Axe Library.
Duplicating
Duplicating is available through Quick-Print Services. Instructors may arrange for Quick-Print service
through the departmental secretary. Faculty using Quick-Print pay the expense from their Faculty
Professional Allowance.
Faculty Computer Room
406 GH is the Faculty Computer Room and is reserved for use only by full-time and part-time faculty and by graduate teaching assistants. The Faculty Computer Room is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Instructors wishing to use the room at other times, including evenings and week-ends, may
check out a key from the department secretary. The room is equipped with four PCs, an HP LaserJet 5
printer, and a scanner. Three of the PCs, computers A, B, and C, are connected to the University computer
network.
Fax Service
Fax service related to professional activity is provided free through the Dean's office, 311 GH. Faxing
may also be done at the interlibrary loan desk at Axe Library. Instructors using the library FAX service
will need to provide the Axe Library fax attendant with the department account number. The expense will
be charged to their Faculty Professional Allowance. Personal fax service at the library (non-professionally
related) is available at fifty cents per page.
Laser Printing
Instructors are asked to use the laser printer in 406 GH to make multiple copies of classroom handouts,
tests, etc., of no more than one or two pages. If a handout or test of more than two pages needs to be
reproduced, use the photocopier in the Dean's office, 311 GH; see section on photocopying.
Instructors are encouraged to use overhead projectors and transparencies instead of classroom handouts
whenever possible. Full-time and part-time faculty may also use the laser printer to make multiple copies
of committee materials and other printing related to professional activity.
Mail Service
The department provides postage for professionally related correspondence. Mail pick-up and delivery to
mailboxes in the department area is also provided, usually twice daily when school is in session and once a
day at other times.
Office Space
The department provides a desk, shelf space, and filing cabinet or file drawer.
Office Supplies
Tape and dispenser, stapler, paper, pens, pencils, etc., are provided for professionally related activities and
are available in the Department office.
Photocopying
Photocopying is done on the copy machine in the Dean#x27s office, 311 GH. Instructors are assigned key code
numbers to access use of the photocopying machine. A log of individual instructor use is recorded
automatically by the copy machine and reported to the department secretary each month. Photocopying
expenses are paid from the Instructor's Faculty Professional Allowance.
Instructors are asked to limit photocopying to classroom-related handouts, tests, and other materials. Full-time faculty may ask the student office staff to photocopy classroom-related materials, tests, etc. Such materials must be brought to the office at least 24 hours in advance of the time the materials are needed. The photocopy budget is limited; instructors are therefore encouraged to use overhead projectors and transparencies instead of photocopied classroom handouts whenever possible.
Telephone
A telephone is provided in each faculty office. Instructors needing to
make professionally-related long-distance calls must use the KANS-A-N
network. To access this service, dial 8, then 1, then the area code
and number.
Part-time faculty and graduate assistants should seek permission in advance before making long-distance calls. Persons making unauthorized long-distance calls may be asked to reimburse the department. The department receives a monthly itemized print-out of long-distance calls made from each extension.
- To make a KANS-A-N network call: To access this service, dial 8, then 1, then the area code and number.
- To make a personal long-distance call from the office, dial 8 + 0 + area code and number, and then charge the call to a credit card, reverse the charge, or charge to a third number.
TV/VCR
Each English classroom (GH 113, 301, 302, 303, 304, 312) is equipped with a TV/VCR unit. Instructors may also schedule use of the TV/VCR in the
Conference Room (422 GH); Grubbs Media (ext. 4918), with 24 hours notice, can also provide a
TV/VCR unit for classroom use.
A library of videos for classroom support and enrichment is kept in the Department office. The department's library of videos is primarily for classroom use, but instructors may check-out videos for home viewing so long as they are returned promptly. Undergraduate students may not check out departmental videos for home viewing but may schedule a time through the department secretary to view videos in 422 GH.
Voice Mail
Voice mail is automatically available on office telephones. The department secretary will provide
instructions on how to work the voice mail service.
