The English Department takes an active role in providing non-classroom educational and enrichment opportunities for students, staff, and area citizens. Faculty, students, and staff are strongly encouraged to support the above activities by participation or attendance. Full-time faculty earn performance appraisal points for so doing.
Following is a list of annual department activities:
- Distinguished Visiting Writers Series
Four writers of national or international reputation are invited to read from their works each academic year, usually in October, November, March, and April. Also in April, student winners of the Sigma Tau Delta creative writing contest read their winning stories and poems.
- Victor J. Emmett, Jr., Memorial Lecture
Each year in September, the winner of the Victor J. Emmett Memorial Prize for the best essay on a literary topic submitted to The Midwest Quarterly is invited to Pittsburg State to receive the Emmett Prize and to deliver a scholarly lecture.
- Other Activities
The department also has a close association with and supports activities sponsored by the Women's Studies Program and the International Student Club.
