Enrollment in English Department courses is generally on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to relevant University restrictions and departmental pre-requisites and regulations.
First-Class Absence Drop Policy
Students who have pre-enrolled but do not attend the first class meeting of any general education course (ENGL 100, 101, 113, 299) or ENGL 301 Technical/Professional Writing are immediately dropped from their enrollment to make room for students on waiting lists. Instructors take attendance during the first class session and give a list of absent students to the departmental secretary immediately after the class is over. Students dropped in this manner will be reinstated in the class only if space is available. If they cannot be reinstated in the same class, they may be transferred to another section that has openings.
Waiting Lists
During pre-enrollment and enrollment, waiting lists are kept automatically in the GUS online enrollment system for the following classes after they close: ENGL 100, 101, 299, and 301. The waiting list for any one section is generally limited to five students (the number with a reasonable chance to get into a section due to drops and no-shows). Students who show up at the first class session but are not on the official class roster should not be allowed to remain in the class; they should be sent to the English Office to check their status on the waiting list. If the section has room for more students, the departmental secretary will enter special permission for them to enroll in the GUS system.
Other Closed Classes
Individual faculty have the responsibility of handling enrollment requests for their own closed classes (other than those classes listed in the previous paragraph). Faculty have the option of turning down all requests for overload, admitting a limited number of extra students by signing permission slips, or keeping their own waiting lists.
