Class Policies:

Computer Classroom Use

Revised November 2000

Overview

Use of the Computer Classroom
Writing classes within the English Department (ENGL 100, 101, 190, 299, 301, 302, 304, 501, 503, and 815) have priority in use of the computer classroom, 101 GH, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on class days. From 3:00 p.m. to close and whenever no class is in session, 101 GH functions as an open University Computer Laboratory. The English Department Computer Coordinator supervises the computer classroom.

To insure priority in reserving the computer classroom, English instructors must sign up no later than Wednesday of each week for use of the computer classroom during the following week. After Wednesday each week, any University instructor may, on a first-come, first-served basis, reserve the computer classroom for the following week.

Persons wishing to reserve the computer classroom sign up on the roster in the English Department office or call ext. 4689. ENGL 301 Technical/Professional Writing, because of its heavily computer-based instructional program, will generally have priority in scheduling the Computer Classroom from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. on MWF. Instructors in other writing classes at those times need to plan ahead carefully in scheduling the Computer Classroom.

Because there are too many writing classes for any class to be taught entirely in the Computer Classroom, instructors are encouraged to be moderate in their use of this facility. Instructors who schedule a class session in the Computer Classroom and later decide not to use it must notify the Department Secretary or the Computer Classroom student technician of the cancellation as far ahead of time as possible to allow other instructors the opportunity to use that class period.

When a class is in session in 101 GH, other students and faculty may not use the computers without permission from the instructor. Students and faculty using the classroom on an individual basis should sign in on the roster at the student technician's desk. The information these rosters provide is important in scheduling, staffing, and budgeting for the classroom in the future, so please be conscientious about signing in and out.

Student Technicians
Student technicians are on duty whenever the computer classroom is open for use. They have the following responsibilities:

  • monitoring use of the classroom
  • conserving and safeguarding equipment, supplies, and facilities
  • assisting instructors and students with questions and problems associated with the operation of hardware and software
  • assisting the Computer Coordinator in managing the classroom.

When writing classes are in session, technicians are expected to circulate about the classroom ready to assist instructors and students. At other times, technicians are expected to monitor equipment and users and to assist students when requested. Technicians are not allowed to study or do their own computer work while on duty.

English Department Computer Coordinator
The English Department Computer Coordinator is responsible for

  • monitoring departmental computer software and equipment (including the media cart)
  • developing faculty and student computer activities within the Department
  • acting as liaison on computing matters between the Department and other University agencies and personnel
  • advising the Department Chairperson on a regular and timely basis on all matters relating to the departmental academic computing program.
