The Writing Center is a drop-in tutorial facility that helps students with their writing concerns. It is operated by the English Department and collaborates with the Writing to Learn Program, including special programs for students in several departments from the sciences, business, and technology. Because many of our tutors are in training to become English teachers, the Writing Center is also strongly influenced by educational theory and pedagogy.
The Writing Center strives to maintain a comfortable, friendly, stress-free environment. Our tutors are specially trained to help students become independent, self-sufficient writers able to solve their own writing problems. The tutors assist students of all levels with their writing, whether essays for freshman composition, short stories for creative writing, reports for technical writing, research papers for upper division courses, or graduate theses. Tutors are also specially trained to work with International Students.
Tutors are available to help students with invention strategies, organization, writing mechanics, grammar, Writing to Learn, research writing, essay exam strategies, or any other writing necessity. Tutors can help students plan papers before they are due by showing them how to move through the writing process, from brainstorming, to organizing, to drafting, to revising, to proofreading, to producing writing that a college instructor will want to read. Or tutors can review papers with students after the papers are graded.
Whatever your writing needs, the Writing Center invites you to drop by. No appointment necessary.
