Technology Campaign
In the fall of 2003, the Teacher Education Unit of Pittsburg State University began a reexamination of the role educational technology plays in the preparation of future teachers and other school professionals. The initial steps occurred when Dr. Steve Scott, Dean PSU College of education, named the Educational Resources Committee, which represents a variety of stakeholders in teacher education, and charged the committee with the following six standards areas:
- TEACHER TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS
- PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES. OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS
- TEACHING, LEARNING, AND THE CURRICULUM
- ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
- PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
- SOCIAL, ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND HUMAN ISSUES
The effort to develop a comprehensive campaign was predicated upon several factors:
- A call by NCATE and KSDE to all schools and colleges of education to enhance the role technology should play in teacher preparation;
- The focus on a technology campaign in PK-12 systems to meet NETS standards; and
- To strengthen and enhance the digital advantage of technologically-literate and capable educational professionals.
These three factors emerged in the fall of 2003 to provide the impetus for the Teacher Education unit to address the increasingly important issues surrounding educational technology.
In an effort to fully utilize the potential of the technology available at Pittsburg State and to model the effective and appropriate use of that technology, the committee relied upon a Blackboard (B) interactive forum, Internet-resources, e-mail, and mailing lists to support and facilitate its work. All agendas, minutes, campaign drafts, committee membership list, related correspondence, and related web sites are available on the committee's Bb site entitled Educational Resource Committee. The committee has continued to share the updated information with the stakeholders in teacher education through various formats.
The Teacher Education Technology Campaign represents the many hours of deliberation and study by the committee. This technology campaign is designed with a three year projected completion goal. Given that fact, it is expected that each fall and spring the Educational Resource Committee will be convened to reexamine and update the campaign.
