Senior Class Memorial Gifts (1906-2001)*

1906 - Statue: Winged Victory - Full-sized reproduction from the original in the Louvre, cast in chalk with marble finish by Caproni & Bros. Boston. This firm also supplied the castings for the gifts of 1907, 1908, 1915, and 1927. Destroyed in 1914 Russ Hall fire.

1909 - Oil portrait: E. F. Porter by George T. Stone. - Now in Alumni Center on indefinite loan from Special Collections.

1910 - $500 to launch the Manual Normal Light [later the Manualite (1919-1923) and the Collegio. Full set in PSU Archives. Microfilmed through 1958.

1911 - Oil painting: R. S. Russ - Location unknown.

1912 - Oil painting: Evolution of a Book. - Destroyed in 1914 Russ Hall fire.

1913 - Fountain east of Russ Hall.

1914 - Oil painting: W A. Brandenburg. - Location unknown.

1915 - Statue: Mercury. - Location unknown.

1918-A - Walnut trophy case for Russ Hall

1918-B - American linden tree near the southwest corer of Russ Hall, at the base of which was placed a marble block engraved: "Dedicated to the Soldier Boys of S.M.T.N., by the Class of 1918." The tree was hit by lightning in the 1960's and removed. Until 1991 the stone was on the southwest side of the Oval. Present location unknown.

1919 - Grandfather clock. - Now in Alumni Center.

1920 - Grandfather clock. - Now in Alumni Center.

1921 - Urn in front of Carney Hall. - Destroyed (carted off after the demolition of Carney Hall). Photograph may be seen in Collegio, July 26, 1967, p. 4, col. 1.

1922 - Oil painting: Spring by Jones H. Bolton. - Location unknown.

1923 - Bible and mahogany pulpit with matching flower stands and brass bowls for Carney Hall Auditorium. The senior class of College High School presented bronze-finished busts of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson to be placed in the niches in the second floor of Russ Hall. - The class paid $30 each for the busts. Locations unknown.

1924 - Marble architectural decorations for Brandenburg Field entrance. - Still above the main entrance to Brandenburg Stadium - Bas-reliefs of a football player and discus thrower, the words "Brandenburg Stadium" and the year "1924."

1925 - Mahogany grandmother clock - In Axe Library.

1926 - Cornerstone for Porter Library - On southeast comer of Porter Hall.

1927 - Statue: Horace Mann. - Removed from Porter Library and stored under the stadium, this larger-than-Life-sized statue became the victim of rain and vandals.

1928 - Equinoxal sundial of Vermont marble. In front of Porter Library [now Porter Hall]. - Location unknown.

1929 - Oil painting: The Beeches by E. R. Sitzman. In 1930 in Library. - Location unknown.

1930 - Walnut trophy case, lined with velvet, electrified. - Location unknown.

1931 - Two trophy cases for Library. - Now at Crawford County Historical Society Museum on north Highway 69 Bypass.

1932 - Five white limestone benches for Oval. - Four of the five are still on the Oval.

1933 - Purple velvet draperies for Carney Hall Auditorium windows. - Lost with the demolition of Carney Hall.

1934 - Set of gray curtains for Carney Hall stage. - Lost with the demolition of Carney Hall.

1935-A - Oil portrait: W A. Brandenburg by Charles A. Chase. - Location unknown.

1935-B - Oil portrait: Garfield Weede. 25th anniversary gift, 1960. - Now in Weede Gymnasium.

1936-A - Bronze seal. - Now in Student Center.

1936-B - In cooperation with the classes of 1937, 1938, and 1940: an entrance Memorial Arch west of Russ Hall (designed by O. A.Hankammer, chair, Industrial Arts Department), with landscaping. In1937, a portion of the monies collected for this project was deposited in a student union building account.

1939 - Electric scoreboard for gymnasium. – Lost in demolition of Gymnasium.

1940 - $500.00. See 1936.

1941 - Oil portrait: W A. Brandenburg by William Bowen. - Now in Alumni Center.

1943 - Contribution to student union building account.

1945 - Outdoor fireplace for College Lake picnic grounds. - Still standing, but plaque has been removed.

1949 - Oil portrait: O. F. Grubbs by William Bowen. - Now in Grubbs Hall.

1954 - Mural by David Overmeyer for Student Union. - Lost.

1955 - Funding for student loans. Connie Pelton Kays, "Senior Gifts at Pittsburg State University," November 30, 1992, p. 1. Ms. Kays notes, "Funding for student loans is still being used by the University to fund short term loans to students, " p. 2.

1956 - Oil portrait: Rees H. Hughes by Lewis Freund. - Now in Overman Student Center.

1960 - Signs identifying Kansas State College. - Repainted in 1976 to identify Pittsburg State University. At the north and south ends of campus on Broadway.

1961 - Fountain [now a planter] in front of Hughes Hall. - Algae and freezing determined the renovation into a planter in front of Hughes Hall.

1962 - Funding for student loans.

1964 - School seal placed in sidewalk.

1965 - Statue: Gus Gorilla by Lawrence Wooster. Cast in bronze by Alumni Association, 1994. In front of Student Center. The plaque has been removed.

1966 - Fountain in front of Carney Hall. - Destroyed with demolition of Carney Hall.

1967-A - Fund for relandscaping area in front of Russ Hall.

1967-B - Plaque listing Outstanding Seniors.

1969 - $1,015 for National Defense Student Loan Matching Fund.

1970 - $1.00 per senior for National Defense Student Loan Matching Fund.

1971 - $1.00 per senior for National Defense Student Loan Matching Fund.

1972 - $1,210 for National Defense Student Loan Matching Fund.

1973 - $1,078.75 for National Defense Student Loan Matching Fund.

1974 - Funding for student loans.

1976 - Funding for student loans.

Centennial Bell Tower1993 - $26,000 towards a $100,000 Centennial Bell Tower.

1994 - $13,947 towards the Centennial Bell Tower.

1995 - $23,930 towards the Centennial Bell Tower.

1996 - $31,594 toward the Centennial Bell Tower.
