MLL's Summer Spanish Immersion Program continues to grow. This year, eleven seminarians from three Dioceses (Dodge City, Springfield-Cape Girardeau, and Wichita) attended Spanish classes taught by three faculty members five hours a day during June and July. Judy Berry-Bravo taught Beginning Spanish Conversation during the June session. Eric Rojas taught Spanish Language & Culture I throughout the summer and Cultural Heritage in Hispanic America during the July session. Monte McFerron taught Spanish Language & Culture II. Native speaker conversation partners, Marjorie Márques and David Pulido, provided by the department, worked individually with the men outside of class for additional practice.
Seminarians received certificates of completion at a celebratory lunch on July 25th. Faculty and staff, including Kathy Dyer and Brittany Hilbert, served favorite foods from the Spanish-speaking world: empanadas (Argentina), tamales (Mexico), enchiladas (Mexico), taquitos (Mexico), chips, salsa, and guacamole (Mexico), guacamole, and three yummy Venezuelan desserts.
Also in attendance was Father Michael Simone of the Diocese of Wichita, Megan Corrigan, Assistant Director of International Programs, and Donna Pintar, Instructional Support Specialist. Everyone enjoyed watching video clips of some of the fun classroom activities that helped bring a smile to the rigors of an intensive learning experience.
