The Department of History at Pittsburg State University

Career Opportunities

The major in History provides the door to many careers, including law, business, government service, public history, archival work, museum work, and teaching history/social studies in public schools and community colleges. Its emphasis on strong communication, research, and analytical skills makes history a good foundation for most occupations.

What Our Graduates Are Doing

Thoroughly prepared while at Pittsburg State University, graduates of the Department of History have taken interesting and rewarding jobs in teaching, law, the ministry, the federal government, management, museum and archival work, library science, publishing, and numerous other fields. With recent increases in the number of job opportunities for high school and middle school teachers, the placement rate for graduates of the history education program in Kansas and neighboring states remains excellent.

Courses of Instruction

We offer our students both traditional and computer-aided instruction, as well as an unusually wide range of courses for a department of our size. In addition to over forty traditional area and period courses covering the entire span of the human experience, the department offers more narrowly focused non-traditional offerings under the Special Topics (American) and Special Topics (World) listings. A considerable percentage of our Special Topics courses, such as Your Family in History, American Presidents, Military Aviation, Irish History, History of Assassinations, History of Organized Crime, and History of Ancient Egypt, are often unavailable in larger history departments at larger universities, and almost never offered at other regional state universities of PSU’s size.
